Atami City
Atami is a city in Shizuoka located between Tokyo and Osaka. More than 6 million Japanese tourists visit Atami every year, and it is known as a vacation destination for city dwellers to relax and unwind. Atami is only a 40-minute bullet train ride from Tokyo, making it easy to travel from the capital. Attractions include the sea and mountains, numerous hot springs, mountain trails with stunning views of Mt. Fuji, and the opportunity to taste sushi expertly prepared from freshly caught fish. Atami is a well known gateway to Mt. Fuji and the Izu Peninsula. The popular city of Hakone can also be reached by car in 30 minutes. |

Atami Castle
Atami Castle was built as a tourist attraction in 1959 on top of a mountain overlooking Atami. The tourist concrete complex exhibits various castles in Japan. Visitors can also unravel Japanese mysteries wearing Edo period costumes. Atami Castle is 100 meters above sea level and offers panoramic views of Atami and Sagami Bay. The castle is generally a popular place to view cherry blossoms in late March and early April, as well as fireworks which are held at the bay every season. |

Statue of Kanichi and Omiya
Located near the sunny Atami Beach in Atami City, Shizuoka, this statue depicts the characters Kanichi and Omiya from the novel "Konjiki Yasha" by Koyo Ozaki. Just before Omiya is to be wed to Kanichi, Omiya accepts a marriage proposal by the son of a wealthy banker. This statue recreates the famous scene where Omiya begs to be forgiven while Kanichi kicks her in anger. The statue is illuminated from sunset until 10PM. An Omiya pine tree sits right next to the statue, and the area has become a major attraction in Atami. |

MOA Museum of Art, Collection Part I
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the museum presents an exhibition with select masterpieces of founder Okada Mokichi’s collection (1882-1955). Among the highly acclaimed works of Oriental art from Japan, China and other countries in Asia is the Red and White Blossoms by Ogata Kōrin, a pair of uni-fold screens, which is widely recognized as the artist’s most celebrated masterpiece. The Tea-leaf Jar with a design of Wisteria by the legendary pottery artist Nonomura Ninsei and the Tekagami Kanbokujō, one of the three best known calligraphic albums, are also on display. more |

The Atami Maritime Fireworks Festival is a historic fireworks festival that started in 1952. While many towns in Japan limit fireworks to the summer season, Atami festivals 10 times a year. Atami Bay is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and the sound of fireworks echoes in the sea creating sound effects that resemble a large stadium. The finale of a sky-like “Niagara Falls” is a must-see with flickering beauty reflected in the ocean water. This is an event unique to Atami that will leave you with memorable memories. more |
