A bronze monument of Duke Kahanamoku standing on Kuhio Beach offers visitors a warm welcome to Waikiki. As one of the best watermen in the world and a master of swimming, surfing, and outrigger canoe paddling, Duke was a real Hawaiian hero. Duke was discovered as a swimming prodigy, and his legend began when he smashed the world record in the 100-yard freestyle in his very first competition. The talented Duke went to win many gold and silver medals throughout his career. He had a significant role in the global spreading of the surfing sport and the aloha culture, earning him the nickname "the father of modern surfing." more |

Le’ahi (Diamond Head)
Just around Waikiki, the 760-foot Le’ahi (Diamond Head) State Monument may be seen along the Honolulu skyline. The crater was given the name Lahi Head by British sailors in the 19th century who believed they had found diamonds on the crater's slopes. Today Leʻahi is a popular hiking destination with panoramic views of the Oʻahu's south shore and Waikiki. This challenging hiking trail has two sets of stairs with a total of 175 steps, as well as historic military bunkers and dark underground tunnels that require a flashlight. The stunning views that await you at the top of Le’ahi Head will make the effort worthwhile. more |
