The first European settler in this area was Daniel Munn who settled here in the 1820s. The Munn family were very charitable donating a part of their land for a local schoolhouse, church and cemetery. It is no wonder the community came to be known as Munn’s Corners. The original Munn’s United Church is no longer standing but the present day church is still active. Munn’s cemetery at 2579 Sixth Line is a historic landmark that is operated by the Town of Oakville.
In the 1980s and 90s north Oakville underwent a dramatic transition from farms to subdivisions. That is when the present day River Oaks neighbourhood was developed.
River Oaks has a new urbanism feel. Many of the houses have a front porch or balcony and the streets are made for pedestrians and cyclist with sidewalks and bicycle lanes. This is very much a family oriented neighbourhood with its own community centre, neighbourhood schools and shopping plazas and many parks with interconnecting trails and footpaths.
